Carolien van Maaswaal graduated from the Netherlands Film Academy in 2018 with the short documentary 'Oneself'. A contemplative film about self-determination in which she asks herself how valuable life is without autonomy.
Sharing her view on life with others through filmmaking is what Carolien wants.
During the presentation of the VPRO Documentary Prize 2018, the jury said the following:
"The jury was very touched by this film, in particular the beautiful, austere endscene. A sincere film, in which the filmmakers have succeeded well to tell a story about a complex issue in a clear, powerful way."
Oneself wonned the Special Mention Award in the Documentary Shorts Competition at CAMERIMAGE festival Poland in 2019.
Carolien is currently based in Amsterdam.
